Saturday, July 28, 2001. First day back, the land looked very different. It was very dry (there has been no rain while we took a month-long break) but the weeds were taller. Our house site was covered with weeds - so we had to start off by taking the weeds out.
But the good part about no rain was that the bottom of the foundation trenches were finally dry enough for us to tamp. There was also very little sand/top soil that ran into it.
At first we weren't sure if we needed to tamp this soil. The soil was full of dense clay and we didn't think it could possibly have any spaces. But after we tried tamping a little, we did feel the difference. Tamped parts were definitely more solid. So tamping works!

This is what the foundation looked like when we came back. Notice all the weeds! |
