Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001. Today was our cement day. We purchased two bags of cement to fill in the cracks between the rocks. We're not really using it to hold up the structure - just fill-in. We mix sand quite heavily to make it "poor man's cement." We went and bought masonry sand from a local construction material supply store. This sand is too fine to be used for cob, but for cement it'll be perfect.
Cementing was quite fun and easy comparing to other things we were doing. At the end of the day we took a shot at starting the second layer of rocks but we couldn't find anything that was stable right away.

Ari is working on chipping away an unwated corner of a rock using a hammer and a chisel. The rock does break eventually, but it often doesn't break quite the way you want it. So we don't use these unless it's a very obvious bump that can be easily chipped away.

Ari in front of a truck full of sand. It's hard to see on this picture, but the truck's butt is quite a bit lower than usual.

Terri took a picture of a toad on our land. She thinks it's cute. Go figure. It is fascinating, however, how it can change color to adapt to its background.

Right before dumping out the sand of the truck. Well, we had to push the sand out by hand, as our truck's back won't lift up like a dump truck!
