Day 31 - Building the Foundation IV

Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001. We tried our hand at the second layer but this is proving to be more difficult than the bottom layer. The basic theory is that we need to overlap the rocks so that the foundation will be strong. But this is easier said than done. While most of our rocks are flat, they are not necessarily the same thickness. But since the rocks are flat they don't deal very well with the height differences between them. We use what we call "chinkers" -- small, flat pieces of rocks, to use as the height adjustments. However we cannot over-rely on chinkers, as these small stones will not be stable enough for the foundation.

We worked for two hours and put up like 3 rocks! Oh well, let's hope we'll learn how to do this better.
