Day 36 - Building the Foundation IX

Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001. Between rainining every weekend and other big projects taking up our lives, the progress on our house has been extremely slow. We were not going to come out to the land today if it wasn't for our neighbor Jim promising to donate some coarse sand to use for our cobbing.

It was still a hot morning so we couldn't work on the foundation for long. Terri worked on mortaring the rocks and Ari went off to cut some undesirable cedars. (There's always stuff to do on our land!)

Then the most beautiful sight to our eyes - a dump truck full of coarse sand arrived! It was a HUGE load. We were so excited, our exhaustion disappeared into thin air. Jim donated the sand from his father-in-law's company because we agreed to work with him on his land's (and ours, too) drainage problem. It is sure nice to have friendly neighbors!

Our second sand pile. With this much coarse sand, we should be able to make a lot of cob!

We cover the foundation up with tarps in order to prevent mortar from curing too fast. Otherwise the "poor man's cement" will crack easily.
