Day 4 - Digging the Foundation IV

Sunday, May 13th. Much more digging. This time we made it out at 7AM and we brought our wheelbarrow. We worked on transporting the piles of top soil to a more distant location, so that we could create room for piles of clay we were going to dig out, not to mention all the rocks and sand and straw that were to come later. The reason we want those piles close to the site is obvious -- those are our building materials. But we won't use the top soil on our house.

This was actually hard work that wasn't quite as fun, as carting the wheelbarrow back and forth seemed very slow. We should have used the wheelbarrow as we were digging the first time, so that we only had to dig it once. But that would have been slow and boring. We live and learn how to balance these things out...

Close up on the foundation where the walls are going to go. We dug about 1 foot deep to find the clay layer. We'll dig about 1.5 feet deeper.

Our site. Notice the smallness of the middle "island."
