Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001. I hate to be redundunt but today we put one layer of rocks on at least 2/3 of the entire foundation. The progress is amazing. This made us realize that we're actually going to start cobbing very soon. The southern foundation is almost finished. We have three layers of rocks completed there and the fourth layer will be put right before cobbing, as we'll mortar the last layer with cob. On the north side we will have to go to the fifth layer as the ground is higher there.
We also worked on taking some of the weeds out from the floor area. We realized that perhaps the reason we're having such a problem with weeds and fire ants there is because we didn't take out the furtile top soil completely - in fact there's about a foot of top soil left there. We'd rather not dig it all the way down to the clay layer because that's going to take a lot of gravel in the middle to bring the floor back up the its proper level, and we shouldn't have to. But we have to be careful about the timing of taking the weeds off, putting a layer of gravel in and perhaps pouring the first layer of cob floor in, so that weeds won't sprout during that process.
