Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001. Mortaring. Terri made a test brick out of clay and coarse sand. She made 3 total, two with 1:1 ratio of clay and sand, one with 3:2 ratio of clay to sand. The reason she made two of 1:1 is because the first one she made with dry clay (well, she wetted dry clay) and she thought that clay was way too dry to start out with, so it was hard to break all the clay chunks by stomping on them. The remaining bricks she made by first soaking clay in water in a bucket. That worked out much better. She will let it dry for a week and see how hard they get.

We took the black plastic off to find more weeds coming under it despite being covered. It's a wimpy looking yellow kind, reminds you a little bit of canned asparagus. |
