Day 49 - Building the Walls I

Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001. Today was the first day of serious cobbing. Our friends Justin, Yu, Hana and Kai came to help us once again, and they were among the first to dive head first into the mud! We taught them how to make good batches of cob in 15 minutes, proving once again how easy it is to cob. Even Hana, a 5-year-old, helped a lot by stomping and spraying water on the cob. The kids also had fun playing the clay pit, although little Kai (almost 3 yrs. old) got stuck at one point. Cobbing is a good, clean (well, actually it is quite dirty, but...) family fun.

Here's the whole family enjoying the mud stomping session. It didn't take long for them at all to figure out how to make good cob.

The fruit of the labor. We wet the cob that was put on previously, and sew the new batch in so that they make a seamless whole.

Another look at the southern wall. As you can see the wall is not quite straight. The foundation took an organic shape, so the wall on top of it has curves as well. This is perfectly OK in cob construction.
