Day 5 - Digging the Foundation V

Saturday, May 19th. Further digging. We made our record arrival at 6:45AM. Early morning sure makes a difference in terms of weather.

Over the week we made some modifications to the house design. Originally it was going to be a round house but now it resembles more of a rectangle. The change was due to the fact that we needed a bathroom somewhere (duh) and some storage space. Also, the roof will have to sit on rectangular beams anyway, so we thought we might as well use the space underneath the roof. The new footprint is probably roughly 200 sq.ft. The beauty of this slow-going home building is that we can afford to adapt and change our building plan depending on needs and things we notice as we proceed.

This is how it looked at the beginning of the morning. This week it didn't rain much during the week so the ground hardened quite a bit. We had to bring out a mattock to break up the soil before using the shovel.

Terri working with a wheelbarrow. Now that we have cleared most of the piles by the house footprint, we are using a wheelbarrow to cart the soil as we dig it. It's a slower process, but this way we won't have to cart the soil twice.
