Day 53 - Building the Walls V

Friday, Nov. 23, 2001. More cobbing, mortaring and stacking were done, but again the major achievement of the day was the planning. We figured out and decided the exact sizes of the windows and where specifically they will go. Terri had a catalogue from Home Depot that listed our options for the sizes of the windows. Then we looked at our plan and our actual building, made some changes to our plan, and decided each of the locations and the sizes. Now Terri is going to buy some wood and build frames for the windows, and hopefully we will have them all ready to be put in when the cob wall reaches that height.

We also realize that this little "diary" is covering only a portion of what really goes into building a house. We're only covering here the days we actually spend on the land building, but this doesn't give the readers insights into how Terri designs the building or how we have spent hours in Home Depot trying to figure out which parts to buy. Countless hours of work have gone into this building outside of the land. Perhaps we should have chronicled our journal starting from the point where we started looking for the right piece of land, as that was a journey in itself. Perhaps for the next building we build we'll do more thorough of a job of documenting. One of our ideas is to someday have somebody make a little video documentary out of our building process.

So there they are, that's where the windows will go in. At least according to the most current plan. We feel that this is a pretty close to being a definitive plan, though.

Another look of the northern foundation. Because some rocks now are above the floor level (especially on the northern side) we are using earth mortar on the inside instead of cement mortar. We just felt that that would be more friendly environment for human living space. Since it's only on the inside we don't have to worry about the rain washing it away.
