Day 55 - Building the Walls VII

Saturday, Dec. 9, 2001. It's been a rainy winter and yesterday (Saturday) was particularly cold and nasty, so we had to cancel a work day sponsored by Austin's Sustainable Building Coalition. Bummer.

But today, although very cold, was a very productive day. We finally finished the northern foundation and started putting cob on that side. Also, Terri put two coats of linseed oil to the door frame. She was wondering for a while what would be the right material to seal the wood, but in the end we were happy with linseed oil. It smells pretty good, unlike other sealants!

We made some great progress cobbing today. It's amazing how fast things go when we don't have to stop and look at our plans and decide what to do about the next phase.

Terri putting on linseed oil on the door. Why didn't she do it before she put it up? Well, we were trying to decide what to put on it, but we really wanted to put up this door frame, as it was taking up a lot of space in our apartment's living room.

This is the view of the house, from the north side, right before we started putting cob on the northern foundation.

This is the cob on the northern side. It takes a lot of cob where it meets the foundation, because we have to make sure it fills all the cracks between rocks. We made an excellent progress today.
