Day 56 - Building the Walls VIII

Monday, December 17, 2001. Since Terri has some time off from work around Christmas time we're working on the land during weedays as well. Today we mainly cobbed and cobbed. We were measuring how much time it takes to make a batch of cob and put it up on the wall - it's about 1/2 hour per batch. One batch of cob, for us, is one 5-gallon bucket full of sand and same of clay. It probably adds about 3-4 inches of cob on about 3-4 feet of the wall length.

However, in some places we weren't putting that much on, as we had to spend some cob on repairing the rain damage. We really underestimated the rain this season - it's been raining a lot. Particularly on weekends. It's rained 3 weekends in a row, preventing a lot of people from coming out to help us. Anyway, we decided that we would cover the cob wall from now on when we're anticipating rain.

Terri is sitting in our house, where a small sitting area is going to be. We've been having our lunches in our house, imagining what it's like to finally live in it!

Ari's stomping away in the cob. He's wearing two layers of pants and socks, and on some cold days he even wears a small glove underneath the rubber gloves he's wearing. We'd love to cob with bare hands and feet, but it's more important to stay warm so we can work longer.
