Day 60 - Building the Walls XII

Saturday, December 22, 2001. The excitement of today came before we arrived on the land, in the form of a phone call. Bryce, our friend and a real estate agent, called early in the morning to let us know that we were in the paper! We had been interviewed and photographed earlier for a newspaper story on cob, but we didn't know when it was going to come out. Our story made the front page of the local paper's Saturday business section, with pictures of both of us! The story was about cobbing as a building technique, and the writer had interviewed "who's who" of Austin's cobbing community. We plan to get permission to reprint the article on this web site.

As for our work today, there was little cobbing but a lot of work on other areas that really needed attention. Terri finally finished the toilet plumbing and glued the pipes together. There was one scare when we thought we couldn't get the parts together, but in the end Terri put it all together. Good job! Then Ari filled up the rest of the floor with the gravel. Terri worked a little on cobbing in the door frame. Next time we'll finish the western foundation -- and that'll be the last of rock work for this house!

Terri consulting her book one last time before glueing the whole thing together.

And here she's glueing it! It was a bit scary because plumbing glue is very strong and dries quickly. That means if she makes a mistake, she'll have to buy a whole another set of components and start all over. There were scary moments but in the end she put it all together.
