Day 64 - Building the Walls XVI

Saturday, December 29, 2001. Actually we did no cobbing today. Instead, we put up the second door frame in the back(western side), and then worked on the foundation on that side of the house, which is the last part of the foundation. It was a little hard because we're running out of good rocks (and we don't want to buy more when we're almost done!). We also took off all the rain cover from all the sides for the first time in a week. We brought out one of the window frames and tested how it would look in various places, just to confirm our plans for where to place windows. It was exciting to see all of the parts uncovered, so we took a lot of pictures.

On the northeastern corner of the house, we plan to have a sitting/dining area with cob benches. Terri started a one-layer rock foundation on which we will construct the benches. We hope to build in some storage space in the bench as well. Terri brought in a few strawbales to test how it feels to have the benches in the house, and we enjoyed sitting on them in our house!

Two different sets of neighbors stopped by to say hi and look at our progress. We have such great neighbors -- all of them have been very excited and supportive for us. At first we weren't sure how our neighbors will react to our unorthodox little cottage, but we must have picked the right neighborhood! We can't wait to finally live here and get to know all our neighbors.

This is a concrete slab we made a few days ago to put up a door frame on the rock foundation. This door frame has a wooden threshold. We did our best to make this a level slab, and we found out today that we did a good job, because the frame stood on its own on top of this!

These are the boards we put in to stand on when the walls get too high. The groove we created the previous day with loose 2x12s to run electric wires through.

Here is the view of the door frame on the slab, with foundation rocks around it to secure it and to complete the foundation on this west end. Later we will stick nails to the sides of the door frame and then cob it in.

Ari trying out the window frame on the south side of the house. This is a frame of "3030" window, which means 3 feet by 3 feet. We just made this one to test how this big window will feel in our little house. Most of the windows will be "2030" which is only 2 feet wide.

This is the northern side. After trying this frame out, we decided that we will put one each of 3030s on both north and south walls, and the rest will be 2030s.

View of the house with two door frames installed. Notice how high the wall is on the side where Terri standing. Does it resemble a house now???

At the end of the day we covered everything up to prevent the rain damage.
