Day 66 - Building the Walls XVIII

Saturday, January 5, 2002. Today was supposed to be a rainy day according to the forecast, and indeed it rained until about 9Am. But it started clearing up after that, so we went out. Today was also supposed to be Austin Sustainable Building Coalition's cob work day on our land. But in the end Joyce was the only one who showed up from SBC. However, we had other friends who came out to help us, and when they all showed up at once it quickly became the biggest work party we have had so far! This was very fun! We put a lot of cob on the wall as well -- another major milestone was reached because we put cob all the way around the house today.

The people who came to help today are: Joyce, Lorie, Ken, Justin, Yu, Hana, Kai, Bill, Satomi, Takuma and Aya. (in case you're wondering about the names - some of these people are Japanese) Thank you!!

Ken, Joyce and Lorie working on the southeastern corner. Joyce originally came just to visit, but she ended up working for an hour or so.

Hana, Takuma and Aya working on the southern wall. Once again the kids had great time cobbing, and their contribution did actually help.

Justin and Bill mixing a batch of cob. Everybody caught on really quick and was getting muddy in no time.

Satomi and Yu working on another batch.

Kai and Takuma putting cob loaves on the wall.

Hana and Takuma. If I'm not mistaken, they are 5 or 6 years old. They're sure old enough to cob!

Yu and Satomi working on the western wall. The door frame is the back door. We made it all the way around the house finally!

Aya, Hana and Takuma collecting cob loaves into a wheelbarrow. They were a little small for cob toss, but they managed to...

...work together to push the wheelbarrow!

Ken and Lorie working on the western wall.
