Day 67 - Building the Walls XIX

Sunday, January 6, 2002. Today was the first gorgeous day of the year. Hopefully we'll have a nice day like today next Saturday, as we had to postpone SBC cob work day twice already because of the weather!

Anyway, our friend Laurie came and we worked on cobbing the northeastern corner, right by the main door. We managed to build up enough wall to reach the height where we want to put the frame in. Next time we'll put in the first window frame in the wall!

We were so excited to build up the wall that on this corner we almost forgot to make the groove for the electric wiring at 2.5 feet above the floor level. Ari tried to shove in some pieces of wood after the wall was built, but he had a very hard time. Cob walls are very strong and it's very difficult and time consuming to carve things out after it's built -- it's best to plan ahead (and don't forget the plan as you build it) so you don't have to do what Ari had to.

Terri is waving at somebody passing by on the road through the door frame. Laurie is standing behind the window frame that we tried to put in. As of this picture the wall wasn't quite high enough. At the end of the day we reached more or less the height we wanted, making it ready for the window frame.

The western wall. The place looks more like a house now that there is wall started on every side.
