Day 68 - Building the Walls XX

Wednesday, January 9, 2002. Today's milestone was the first window frame! We cobbed up to about 36 inches on the northeastern corner and put our first window frame in. The window size is 2 feet wide and 3 feet tall, so it's pretty small -- but that's about as much as we can fit on this tiny house. (we will have a couple of 3x3 windows on other walls)

It's particularly exciting to watch the window frame go up because it means that we don't have to build walls in that space. So all the sudden our wall looks much closer to completion (well, not really, but). Also having window frames in place really make the place look like it's going to be a house. When it was just a hole in the ground it took some acts of imagination to see a house there, but now it's not so hard any more.

We put up the two windows on the eastern wall to see how we liked the way they look. Notice the left window is on a straw bale, while there are a couple pieces of lumber beneath the right one. We did plan on having the windows in at 36 inches, but we really wanted to test and see if that's where we wanted them before we put them in the cob.

And now the window frame is cobbed in. We intentionally didn't put it parallel to the door frame, because the house itself is round. We did try putting it that way, but didn't like it. That kind of detail is at best left undecided until you see how the real things fit together.
