Day 7 - Digging the Foundation VII

Saturday, May 26th, 2001. Yet more digging. Terri's mom, Darlene, flew in from Wisconsin to work on our land. (Well, that's really not all true, but we put her to work since she was around) Today we put our shovels into the clay layer. Thanks to the rainstorms during the week it was not rock hard -- but the problem with wet clay is that it's heavy and it sticks to shovels. But it was sure exciting to start a new pile for the clay, since we're going to use it for our walls later in the process!

How it looked in the beginning. We had stopped the previous day at about where the top soil ends and the clay layer begins. The fireants' nest in the middle is still there, but we took it out on this day. Our bait had worked!

Terri and Darlene working on the foundation. It worked pretty well to have two wheelbarrows, two people digging and one person pushing the wheelbarrow and dumping the content to the appropriate piles.

See the big chunks of soil? That's because this soil has heavy clay content. Sandy soil doesn't clump like that. This will make some excellent cob!

Ari using the mattock to break up some of the tough clay. We told you he worked hard, too! The ant nest is gone.
