Day 71 - Building the Walls XXIII

Sunday, January 13, 2002. Today we worked on the southern wall. We were hoping to build up to the window frame there, but we quickly realized that this side was much more complicated manner. Almost the entire south side is going to be a kitchen area, so we have to put lots of stuff in the wall to prepare for the counters, plumbing, wiring and so on. We had ideas for how these things attach to the wall, but some things change a little when we try to put our theories into practice.

One of the major challenges of cob building is the process of planning ahead yet changing and adjusting the plan to fit the actual building. Of course, pros have to have it all designed and laid out before they start, but being amateurs we don't know if some of our plans work or not. And stopping and discussing the best ways to accomplish certain things take time. So we didn't quite get as far as we were hoping to today, but it was still a very productive day.

The inside of the southeastern corner. A bunch of wood pieces were put in the wall to make place for different things. There's going to be a sink here. It was quite a challenge to stick the long piece of wood in and keep them level while we were cobbing. As you can see we didn't quite succeed with some of them.
