Day 79 - Building the Walls XXXI

Saturday, February 9, 2002. Rain and other preparations prevented us from coming to the land most of the week, although Ari came yesterday to work on a section with our new friend, Colby. Today we plan to fix the design error of last weekend and finish the southwestern corner, which is the kitchen area. We spent hours debating its design and researching materials for how to make an effective use of the wall.

As for re-doing the northeastern corner, we settled on a double arch design in the end. Just having one big arched shelf in the space didn't fit this curvy corner, but separting the space into two did it! We have some more African sculptures (from Terri's Tanzanian adventures in '95) that'll look great in those spaces.

Well, we bagan our new wall only to realize that our actual wall space in the kitchen is much smaller than we had thought. More adjustment time! On this wall we now have a spice rack and shelves for other similarly small material, a space for a magnetic kitchen knife holder, and a pair of cute small cob baskets. Terri did a really good job with sculpting all these features!

Our new friend, Colby came back with his girlfriend, Mary, at the end of the day to show her the place. They're very interested in cob building and found out about us through Gayle, the cob architect in Austin. We're glad to see that our little building is already giving some inspirations to others!

So this is what the northeastern corner looks like at the end. Two arches that are not lined up vertically. It's a very cool and cozy corner! The arches are actually not exactly identical, but we left them that way. The "hand-made" feel is what we're after.

And here is the southeastern kitchen corner. It'll be a really cute kitchen space!

View from the south. With each space between the windows filled, the house is really starting to take its shape.
